밸리 데이즈(Valley Daze) — 밸리에서 자란 젊은 창작자가 연 새로운 로컬 스토리텔링의 시작

코넬대 커뮤니케이션학과를 졸업한 이진우(23)군은 늘 뉴욕 출신 친구들과 “창작의 중심이 어디인지”에 대해 토론하곤 했다. 그러나 그가 자랐던 샌퍼낸도 밸리(San Fernando Valley)야말로 “LA를 실제로 움직이는 사람들, 진짜 변화가 일어나는 곳”이라는 그의 신념은 흔들리지 않았다. 그 확신은 결국, 밸리의 소소한 일상과 숨겨진 이야기를 담은 TV 파일럿 'Valley Daze'라는 작품으로 탄생했다.

■ 밸리에서 태어나 밸리를 기록하려는 청년의 첫 작품

Valley Daze 는 밸리 커뮤니티 안에서 실제로 회자되던 성장담들을 바탕으로, “밸리의 민속(Folklore)”과 같은 소문·사건들을 재구성해 만든 시리즈다.
공동 창작자 조슬린 캣(Jocelyn Catt)과 함께 이진우는 “밸리에 사는 평범한 사람들의 삶이, 사실은 얼마나 극적이고 아름다운지”를 보여주고 싶었다고 말한다.

첫 번째 에피소드는 마르코 비지오(Marco Bizio) 감독이 연출했다. 작품은 단순한 ‘전자담배의 이동 경로’를 따라가며, 계층·문화가 다른 다양한 청소년들의 교차점을 포착한다.
부유한 아이들, 경제적으로 어려운 아이들, 약물에 취한 아이들, 그리고 그 주변을 지키는 아이들까지— 밸리라는 공간 속에서 드러나는 모순과 생생한 현실, 그리고 그 안에서도 서로 곁을 내어주는 청춘의 윤리가 차분하면서도 강한 톤으로 드러난다.

■ “할리우드는 가까이 있지만, 우리는 늘 바깥에 있었다”

이진우는 밸리에서 자라며 항상 “바로 옆 동네에서 영화가 만들어지고 있는데도, 우리는 그 세계와 단절되어 있었다”고 느꼈다고 말한다.

“우리 부모님은 밸리에서 작은 사업을 하며 아이들에게 코딩을 가르쳐요.
제 친구들 대부분은 유색인종이었고, 어떤 친구는 푸드뱅크에 의존해야 했어요.
그런데 10마일만 가면 할리우드 스타들이 사는 동네가 나오지요.”

이진우는 그 간극을 바라보며, “그렇다면 우리가 직접 만들자”는 마음으로 프로젝트를 시작했다.
이러한 진정성은 Valley Daze의 정체성이 되었고, 지역 사회의 뜨거운 지지를 이끌어냈다.

■ 밸리 사람들이 직접 만든 밸리 이야기—100% 로컬 팀

파일럿 제작 과정 역시 밸리답다. 유명 자본에 의지하지 않고, 지역 사회의 모금과 네트워킹만으로 추진되었다.
그 노력은 마침내 데이빗 대스트말치안(David Dastmalchian)—<다크나이트>, <프리즈너스> 등에 출연한 배우—의 관심을 끌었다.

“밸리의 모든 사람이 손을 보탰어요.”
“NYU, 카네기멜론을 졸업하고 밸리로 돌아와 이 프로젝트에 참여한 배우들, 촬영감독, 조명, 의상 디자이너까지 모두 밸리 출신이에요.”

진짜 밸리가 만든, 밸리를 위한 작품이라는 말이 어울린다.

■ 코넬에서 배운 ‘첫 프로젝트의 두려움을 넘는 법’

이진우는 코넬대에서 배운 경험이 큰 자산이 되었다고 말한다.
특히 Christopher Byrne 교수의 수업 Writing and Producing the Narrative for Digital Media는 그의 첫 작품을 만드는 과정에서 큰 용기를 주었다.

“첫 작품을 만드는 건 정말 무서워요.
교수님 수업이 저에게 그 두려움을 넘어서 보라고 했어요.”

그 이후 그는 음악 영상, 단편 영화 등 다양한 프로젝트의 프로듀서로 섭외되기 시작했고,
이제는 본격적으로 밸리로 돌아와 풀타임 프로듀서로 활동하고 있다.

■ 밸리에서 시작되는 새로운 예술 운동

의 성공 여부는 앞으로 공개될 파일럿에 달려 있지만, 이미 지역 청년들에게는 상징이 되었다.

“할리우드가 아니더라도, 우리 스스로 이야기를 만들 수 있다.”
이진우와 그의 팀은 그 사실을 증명해 보였다.

파일럿은 2025년 12월 13일, LA의 Million Dollar Theater에서 공식 프리미어를 가진다.

Valley Daze — A New Wave of Local Storytelling from a Valley-Born Creator

 

Genu Lee (23), a recent graduate of Cornell University’s Department of Communication, often found himself debating with his New York friends about “where creativity truly happens.” Yet for him, the answer was always clear: the San Fernando Valley — the place where he grew up and the place he believes is home to “the people who actually move LA, the real forces of change.”

That conviction eventually became Valley Daze, a TV pilot that captures the quiet beauty and hidden stories of the Valley’s everyday life.

 

■ A Valley Native’s First Attempt to Record His Home

Valley Daze draws from real or widely rumored coming-of-age stories shared across the Valley community. Alongside co-creator Jocelyn Catt, Lee wanted to portray how “the ordinary lives in the Valley are, in fact, dramatic, complex, and deeply beautiful.” The pilot episode, directed by Marco Bizio, follows a vape pen traveling through the hands of teens from different socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. Rich kids and poor kids, those battling addiction and those trying to stay clean — their paths intersect in ways that reveal the Valley’s contradictions, and the quiet ethic of young people trying to live side-by-side with those whose circumstances differ from their own.

 

■ “Hollywood is Right There, But We’ve Always Been Outside of It”

Growing up, Lee recalls hearing about films being shot just miles away in Hollywood, yet feeling completely disconnected from that world.

“My parents run a small business in the Valley teaching kids how to code.
Most of my friends were people of color; some relied on food banks.
And just ten miles away, celebrities lived in another universe.”

Seeing that gap, Lee decided: if the industry wasn’t going to open its doors, he and his friends would build their own path instead.
That authenticity became the heart of Valley Daze — and what ultimately drew widespread community support.

 

■ A Valley Story Made Entirely by Valley People

The production process mirrored the spirit of the show: grassroots, collaborative, and fiercely local. Rather than relying on big studios, the team raised funds and built their network within the Valley.

Their efforts even caught the attention of actor David Dastmalchian, known for The Dark Knight and Prisoners.

“Everyone in the Valley pulled together,” Lee says.
“The cast is made up of actors who grew up here, went to NYU or Carnegie Mellon, and came back to be part of this.
The director, cinematographer, lighting crew, costume designers — every single person is from the Valley. That means everything to us.”

The result is truly a project made by the Valley, for the Valley.

 

■ Cornell Lessons That Helped Overcome “First Project Fear”

Lee credits his time at Cornell with giving him tools and courage to take on a first major creative project.
In particular, Professor Christopher Byrne’s course Writing and Producing the Narrative for Digital Media played a crucial role.

“Making your first thing is terrifying.
That class helped me work through the fear — and ask the right questions about pitching, story structure, everything.”

Since then, Lee has produced music videos, short films, and other projects — building a portfolio that now allows him to work full-time as a producer back home in the Valley.

 

■ A New Artistic Movement Growing in the Valley

The long-term success of Valley Daze will depend on how the pilot is received, but for many young creators in the community, the project has already become a symbol of possibility.

“Even if Hollywood doesn’t let us in, we can still make our own stories.”
Lee and his team have proven exactly that.

The pilot will have its official premiere on December 13, 2025, at the Million Dollar Theater in Los Angeles.
